Verizon does not appear to allow to do it unless you become a business account (more $$) . Has anyone set up a web server (apache) and have it accesible via http from outside? Any workarounds? they say it is possible only with static ip address. which you can get if you pay them large amt. The dynamic address of the router is not accessible or even pingable from outside with a consumer account.

Verison (or any other company) does not publish their internal addresses on the internet. The only way to have a web server on the internet is to have an public address mapped back to your server. So ISPs do provide space on a web server for their customers, verison is 10MB of space. Very limited. You could look into an web hosting company and see if it%26#039;s cheaper.

If you are not set on a business plan you would most likely be going against your acceptable use policy, thus putting yourself at jepordy of loosing your internet service. Depending on how you pay (how many months at a time) the price ranges from $7.50 to $6.20 a month. You%26#039;ll need to know how to add your own content to the template and build the other pages. So, just having a template is not going to help if you don%26#039;t know how to work with it.

I suggest you find a host that has a site building system along with all the other things you want. You could probably come close to the template you like.

A starting place is to go to http://www.register.com and do a WHOIS lookup of your domain dame. That will tell you at least who your domain name was registered through.

To find out on hosting, go to http://www.arin.net and type in the IP address equivalent of your website and run a search on it. That will tell you who hosts it.

I%26#039;ll give you some general guidelines just to help out.

Question 1:

What is your target market for viewing the sight and what does the site need to do? Is it just informational, will you be doing ordering, will it need to access a database to pull information?

You need to base your page size on a 28.8 modem connection and how long the page will take to load with a given size of the HTML / ASP / CFM file size. Assume that people don%26#039;t know how to navigate your website. Always remember KISS ( Keep It Simple Stupid ) it will save you headache in the long run. Stay away from lots of motion and flashing icons / pictures for a corporate website, it distracts attention and will usually take longer to load.

Question 2:

Again, depends on what you are using the site for. The requirements will change depending on the number of hits you expect to receive, what you are storing on that server and if you will need multiple computers.

A very complex system would be a web server with a min of 2 Gig ram and 100+ gig hard drive, a database server with roughly the same requirements, proxy server / firewall unless you are planning a different network structure where the web server is outside the DMZ of the corporate network. Also the design tools for building the site like a WYSIWYG editor Dreamweaver, VB Studio, SQL, exc.... and however much those licenses require you to spend.

I was told by someone that if users feel %26quot;navigationally challenged%26quot; when they land on a website...majority of them will leave your website within a minute, maybe less.

So, one of the primary factors that come into consideration is if your website has a good flow, so that users can navigate the site easily. This would mean good graphics, soothing to the eye (no contrasting, color styles)

Now also imagine yourself trying to visit a website that takes more time than you think it should to load. Will you be a regular on that site, probably not. It is important to use industry standards - CSS etc that helps to lower page load times.

What you have to keep in mind is your target audience. A considerable number of users across the world still dont have access to DSL or Cable internet. Would it make sense for them to access a site with Flash on it. Maybe have a flash version and a non-flash version of your site for users who have access to different bandwidth.

Nowadays most data drives sites are developed using .NET or jsp. You could also use classic ASP, although that is slowly reducing in number. It will be upto your company to choose one development environment over the other. Once you know which environment to choose it should be fairly easy to understand what hardware requirements should be required to implement a website. If you have products to display, user accounts etc. I would say that you would also need a database software (SQL, DB2, Oracle etc.)

I am going to be responsible for monitoring a website which will host a web application, and it is expected to generate a fairly large amount of hits. I have done some research, but I was just curious if anyone has any suggestions, or past experiences with any they have used.

you did not say what web server BUT the web server logs files would be the best way to monitor your web traffic. There are tons of free tools to parse and generate reports on log files. I have mostly used apache so if your using IIS I really cannot offer any advice but I imagine searching for

I%26#039;m setting up a sales information system, and I%26#039;m using MS SQL 2000 for my DB and PHP.. My question is, what is the best practice for server setup. Is it much faster to host the web server and the DB server on the same machine or to have them hosted on a separate machine. The system is already working fine, the codes are already optimize. If your performance tuning first check the queries themselves, its most likely that you have slow queries, look at the slow query log in MS SQL or its performance stats to help track down the slow queries. Try adding indexes to the the columns in the tables where there is a performance bottleneck. Indexes should resolve most of your read performance issues. You can determine which columns should be indexed by how your joins are written index the columns in the join or in the where clause.

You can always move the db server to its own box, but until you can isolate the problem you will probably still have a slow query performance.

. I%26#039;ve seen this type of issue before and 9 out of 10 times, figuring out which query is the bottleneck, re-writing it and then adding the necessary indexes fixes the issue good luck! .

In performance problems always look for the bottleneck. In your case your queries are the bottleneck. If you move your DB to another machine, they will also take long time to process hence you should keep the DB and your web application on the same machine and try to optimise your queries.

Optimising queries is a whole world by itself. Most usually you should be careful on locks being issued as you query your data. Make yourself familiar with optimising SQL Server queries so that you know what%26#039;s causing them to be slow.

Setup web site when ISP is blocking incoming connections?

I am trying to host a web page from my computer so i can download files off it when I%26#039;m not at home. I have done this from my friends houses but because my ISP has a firewall that blocks incoming connections (any connections that i do not start myself) i am unable to do this. Do you know any way around this? all i can think of is to use some kind of proxy or VPN but i don%26#039;t know where i could find one that would be free to use. any help?

I really like a solution from Microsoft called FolderShare you install it from Foldershare.com and it gives you a web interface to all your files. And you can search your files so if you can%26#039;t remember exactly which file you were looking for you can still find them.

The trouble lies in enforcing it.

One thing you might do is what writers do with their for-print work... when you put a major new writing on your website, print it out and mail a certified, registered copy to yourself. That way, if it%26#039;s ever an issue, you have physical, sealed proof that you had it first.
