Building a website (need help)?
if you do not know what webhosting is, then i doubt you can learn html quickly.
use freewebs.com, it hosts an easy to build website similar to myspace without the gayness.
Building a website (need help)?
A web host is the company which holds your website. The site is %26quot;hosted%26quot; on one of their servers, which allows people to view it. People will not be able to view a website that%26#039;s only stored on your own computer unless your computer also runs as a webserver.
To start your own website you have a couple of options:
1/ use a site builder and just plug in your own content.
2/ start with a template, and work on improving it.
3/ design the whole thing yourself.
4/ use a premade service, such as a social networking site.
5/ hire someone to make it for you.
I would recommend finding a good free webhost (Yahoo Geocities is the obvious one, as it will be registered to your existing Yahoo account) and going from there. Yahoo has a free sitebuilder you can use, which is fairly easy to work with, and if you decide to get more advanced, you can edit pages manually too.
To design pages yourself you will need to learn HTML at the very least, and possibly CSS for more advanced techniques.
Hope that helps :)
Other Replys:There are two ways to do this. One, either use a site like http://www.wordpress.com where you can edit/add content and pages through their site when you login (and you don%26#039;t have to find hosting or a domain name), or you do get hosting and a domain name and also learn how to build your own pages and graphics.
For the first option, your domain will be yourusername.wordpress.com. If you want your own domain, like www.mariasgarden.com, you have to purchase it. You can go to http://www.1and1.com, http://www.namecheap.com or http://www.godaddy.com and pay roughly $9/year for a domain. With WordPress you can pay them $10/year to have your own domain show up in the address bar of your site.
For the second option, again you%26#039;d get your domain then you also have to have hosting (a service that stores your web files and serves them up to viewers). 1and1 and GoDaddy provide hosting, too, as well as http://www.totalchoicehosting.com. Lots of companies do this, and you can get plans as low as $4/mo.
With this option you have to learn at least one web authoring program to build your pages. You can either learn the HTML and CSS languages or you can try programs that are visually driven (dragging and dropping elements onto the page). Try http://www.coffeecup.com/software/ (VisualSite Designer half way down the page) or http://www.nvu.com, which is free.
It helps to know how to use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create graphics like gradients, icons, and other stylistic effects, too. You can try www.gimp.org/ or http://www.inkscape.org/ both of which are free.
When you make your pages (about, contact, etc) you%26#039;ll need an FTP program to connect to your hosting server and upload your files. You%26#039;ll get the access info from your hosting company. Do a search for open source FTP programs. You%26#039;ll find plenty to download.
Just make sure your home page is called %26quot;index.html.%26quot; Otherwise, you can name your pages whatever you want.

Other Replys:If you currently are a web subscriber, your current provider offers a homepage into which you can FTP your current webpage(s) [which can be authored/designed using Composer [an authoring tool which is free when using Netscape browser], NotePad, MSN Word, FrontPage, DreamWeaver, etc.] and use the homepage hosting services. In a sense, you are hosting a commercial webpage via the homepage link and incurring merely the monthly access of, say, AOL.com, etc. Nevertheless, should you want to link your current domain name to the homepage URL, you%26#039;ll need to use a third-party redirection service, i.e., mydomain.com [which is free] or simply direct your domain name registry, i.e., godaddy.com to forward your domain name [with masking] to the link it to your homepage URL. It%26#039;s that simple.
Good luck!
